        Columbia Gas Power Lunch

        Columbia Gas of Ohio, with headquarters in Columbus, is one of the nine energy distribution companies of NiSource Inc. (NYSE: NI). Serving approximately 1.4 million residential, commercial and industrial customers, Columbia Gas of Ohio is the largest natural gas utility in the state.

        This year’s mid-term elections are high stakes for all political interests at key levels of government.  37 Governors are on the ballot. 37 Senators are on the ballot.  There are 150 ballot measures on ballots in 35 states.  All House seats are up for re-election. This is a crucial election, and we are asking the IAmEmpowered community to make sure Urban America gets a voice.  It starts with you.  Pledge to vote and get the word out.  Tell your family and friends that we cannot afford to sit out this election and ask them to commit to vote on November 2nd, 2010.

        Karen "KG" Gary, owner, Synergi Salon and Facilitator, Get It Straight Workshops

        During the Entrepreneurial series young professionals will learn how local entrepreneurs have taken their ideas, skills, abilities, and passions and turned it into a successful and profitable business.  Each month an entrepreneur will discuss their product, how they came up with the idea, and the steps they took to turn their idea into fruition.  This is an opportunity for young professionals to network, ask questions, and become motivated to start their own business. 

        Karen “KG” Gary, owner of Synergi Salon in Whitehall, operates a premier hair styling facility.  With 22 years’ experience in the field, KG, has received acclaim for her expertise with natural hair care and styling. KG has created and patented Synergi Salon Products which she sells and uses at her salon.  In an effort to create a healthier and more eco-friendly environment for her employees and customers, KG’s establishment is now a green salon.

        In addition, the Columbus native offers on-going “free” GetItStrait workshops which attract hundreds of women seeking alternatives to using chemicals and processing their hair.  KG also co-writes a weekly column about natural hair for ColumbusBlack.com, an online social networking site, and the author of GetitStrait, an e-book about her approach to helping women wear natural hair.  Additionally, KG has a television show on the hair television network.

        This event is free for members and $5.00 for
        non-members.

        During the Entrepreneurial series young professionals will learn how local entrepreneurs have taken their skills, abilities, talents and passions and turned it into a successful business venture.  Each month a successful entrepreneur will discuss their product, how they came up with the idea, and the steps they have taken to start their business.  It is an opportunity for young professionals to network, ask questions, and become motivated to start their own business.

         

        On September 30 from 6-7:30 pm, Kimberly Gayle, Executive Intervention, LLC, Vice-President of Organization Development and Coaching will kick-off the series and present on "Brain Power: Become an Idea Machine and Make Something Happen." This workshop will showcase innovation and idea generation techniques to identify opportunities to start a business. It all starts with an idea, but most people don't know how to transform that idea into a profitable business.

         The Columbus Urban League joins the National Urban League and affiliates across the country in celebration of the National Urban League's Founders' Day, Septeber 29, 2010. The Columbus Urban League will mark the 100th anniversary of the National Urban League with an "Open House" on the 29th from 4pm-6pm at our headquarters: 788 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Columbus, OH 43203.

          2010 College Fair 2010 Kiwanis College Fair

        On Monday, September 27, more than 3,500 high school students from Columbus City Schools and surrounding areas will converge on the North Hall of the Veterans Memorial (300 W. Broad Street) to visit with approximately 175 college and university campus representatives.

        This 31st annual event is conducted Kiwanis Club of Columbus and is free to students and their parents.  Most students will attend with their school counselors during scheduled sessions in the morning beginning at 9 a.m.  A more informal, open session for parents and students, will be available from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. that evening.  

        Counselors will be able to sign their students up beginning in August.

        College and University Representatives can begin reserving tables now by filling out and submitting the following registration form and participation fee.  Click here for a copy of the invitation letter and click here for a copy of the registration form that needs to be submitted along with the payment.  Schools needing a W-9 Form in order to process payment, may click here.

        Representative James E. (Jim) Clyburn of South Carolina, House Majority Whip, will headline the 80th Warren-Youngstown Urban League Dinner on Thursday, September 9, 2010.  Representative Clyburn became the first African-American to represent South Carolina in Congress in nearly 100 years when he was elected in 1992.was the first African-American from South Carolina to win a House seat in nearly 100 years.  Today Representative Clyburn holds the third highest-ranking position in the House after serving as Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Vice Chair and Chair of the House Democratic Caucus.

        A native of Sumter, South Carolina, Representative Clyburn is the son of activist fundamentalist Preacher Enos Lloyd Clyburn and Almeta Dizzley Clyburn, a beautician.  He was elected president of his youth NAACP chapter at the age of 12, participated in a number of civil rights marches and demonstrations as a student leader at South Carolina State College, and played a leading role in organizing sit-ins and marches in Orangeburg, South Carolina that resulted in his arrest and that of 387 other students, including his future spouse, Emily England.

From there, we’ll show you how you fit into the picture, and empower you to make a difference from day one as a member of the CULYPA.

        The Columbus Urban Young Professionals attended The National Urban League Centennial Conference on 
        July 28-July 31. 
        They witnessed President Obama deliver a major education reform speech emphasizing how his signature initiatives are driving education reform across the country and focusing the nation on the goal of preparing students for college and careers. He highlighted the unprecedented support for and adoption of common standards by a majority of states already, and the Administration’s commitment to develop the next generation of high-quality assessments benchmarked to common standards. The President's speech focused on the dramatic reforms that states, school districts, schools and teachers unions have undertaken over the past 18 months, including steps to improve teacher effectiveness and transform persistently low performing schools. www.nul.org

        Centennial Legislative Policy Conference

        CULYPA will join the National Urban League for a two-day summit with Urban League affiliates. Urban League CEO's, board chairs, presidents of affiliate Guilds and Young Professionals will be present. The conference will kick off at the National Press Club.


         

        The Columbus Urban League Young Professionals (CULYPA) in conjunction with the Greater Columbus Community Helping Hands (GCCHH) Inc., is sponsoring an essay contest open to senior high school students attending East High School, Beechcroft High School, South High School, and Linden McKinley High School, and will be entering college in the Fall of 2010.
        The Students are to select one of three "Community Service/Volunteerism" questions for an opportunity to win a laptop computer.
        The purpose of this essay is to honor those local youth entering college, who volunteer and serve as leaders in their community. Essays must be postmarked no later than midnight March 29, 2010, and should be sent to 6644 Feder Rd., Galloway, OH. 43119. For more information please contact

        The Columbus Urban League, founded in 1918, is the oldest and largest community based organization committed to empowering African-Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream in Columbus, Ohio. The Young Professionals is an auxiliary association of the Columbus Urban League, whose mission is to engage local young professionals (age 18-40) in the achievement of social and economic equality. "Rising to the Occasion” is a Scholarship fundraiser with a 2009 financial goal of $15,000 to aide African-American students in secondary education.
